Being over 50 has made it hard to compete with all these young people and their quick reflexes. A lot of times they will see me way before I see them and then it’s to late. I still have a lot of fun playing and am really amazed at the technology that brings it all together. Most of the time I have to play with “randoms” which are teammates I don’t know and few ever say anything or even play the objective games the way they should be played. I did recently find a gaming community http://m-g-club.com Which is called Mature Gamers Club. So far they seem pretty tolerant of My suckyness.

Well I bought me another domain but I don’t plan on developing it for a while. Maybe this winter? Since I’ve started a recipe page on my personal website it’s given me something to design and learn with.

So I’m going to make me a recipe blog and as of now I plan on using wordpress. Now there are hundreds of recipe sites and a lot of recipe blogs but I don’t care if I am one of the best out there. I know I could never compete with sites that have teams of professionals working 40 hours a week. It’s just another step towards becoming a true webmaster.

I’ll never be good enough to write my own php and Java scripts. That’s why I’ll use a wordpress blog. I can use some scripts and plug-in to make it easier. I’ll have to design my own theme using a basic wordpress theme. All this will take a while let alone having enough recipes to put on it. I figure i I can add a recipe or 2 each week I can get a lot of them soon enough.

One of the biggest things that slow me down is I have to make the recipes I’ll have on my pages. I want the pictures I use to be mine and original. I’ve noticed on some recipe pages they have used the same pic for different recipes.

That on top of learning things I’ve never done before sure makes a lot of work. I just downloaded an Ebook called “Learning PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript” by O’Reilly Media. This is pretty advanced for me but if I am able to learn the basics it would make me a better web designer. It will be a lot more work but could make for some better pages. I could just use wordpress with all the plug ins made by people that are good with this type of script code. But then again if I can do this stuff it would be mine.

They were right. It wasn’t to hard setting it up and getting it to work. Now getting it to work the way you want is a different story. It took a while for me to figure out how to configure the meta tags to have the correct links, pictures and descriptions on my mini feeds from the fan page. At first I didn’t know each page needed it’s own meta tags. Facebook’s instructions seem constructed to only set up 1 page so. except for your comment. your mini feed would always be the same. I guess it would of helped if I knew some of the lingo they used on the instructions.
All this also made me redo the structure of my pages. I was bringing the head section into all the pages with PHP so i had to redo it so they each had their own head sections.

I think people are so used to seeing adds on a website they come to expect it. Ever notice a page that doesn’t have adds? Don’t you think it looks a little plain in some cases. If I happen to get even a penny from google can I say I’m a professional web designer? LOL

OK, so if I’m going to have my recipe page on my regular pages I better figure out a way to make it easy for me. What I mean is if I’m going to have a bunch of recipes I don’t want to have a full page or every recipe. That would mean every time I want to change or add a link I’ll have to change it on every page. What I decided to do was to start building the pages with the PHP include(). That way I can bring in each part of the page and use that part on all the pages. So if I have one file for like the header, I can bring that file onto every page. Change that file and all the pages change.

Now I did this then realized I’m still gonna have to change links on the other pages like the home, gallery and media pages. Well I guess I’ll just have to build all them pages with php also so all the pages look the same.

I was thinking about using my WordPress blog for my recipe page. It is a real powerful program and can do a lot of things. It would be a lot easier than compiling it on a web page. The WordPress blog makes it a lot easier to put things like print buttons, comment threads on each page, categorizing pages and makes it a lot easier to load recipes with some of the great plug-ins it has. The only problem is, I do loose a little control. For now I’ve decided to do it on a webpage. I’ll just have to spend a lot of time setting up the structure and learn how to do a lot of things I haven’t done before. It won’t be the easy way but in the long run I think it will be better to learn how to do everything I want.
